The maps behind the names

When Strell tells you you're in Old Town or Bushwick, that name comes from open data. The neighborhood maps Strell builds from it are open too.

Licence

Strell's neighborhood and town boundary tiles are published under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.

The tiles are built from OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps data, with Who's On First and a few city datasets filling the gaps. Because they're a derivative of ODbL data, they stay open under the same licence. You're free to copy, share and adapt them, as long as you:

  • Credit the sources, using the attribution below.
  • Share alike: if you publish a database adapted from the tiles, publish it under the ODbL too.
  • Keep it open: don't lock a copy behind technical measures without also offering an unrestricted one.

That's a summary, not the licence itself. The full text of the ODbL 1.0 is what applies.

Thank you to everyone who maps their own neighborhood. Strell only works because you did.

The basemap

The streets, parks and water you see under the mist are drawn by Mapbox from OpenStreetMap data. That basemap is Mapbox's, not part of Strell's tiles, and isn't covered by this page.

Corrections

Spotted a wrong name or a boundary in the wrong place? Long-press the map in Strell and choose Report a problem, or email support@strell.app. If the mistake is in OpenStreetMap itself, fixing it there helps everyone who uses the map.
